IISER: Bio-Waste Cathode brings down costing of solar cell price

Kolkata Researchers (IISER) use bio-waste-derived electrode as cathode to bring down the cost of solar cells

This has been the first time when human hair has been applied as a cathode in a quantum dot sensitized solar cell device.

IISER has developed graphitic porous carbon cathode by purifying human hair and then reacting it with H2SO4 (Sulphuric Acid) to attain precarbonisation.

It has shown remarkable achievement in power conversion as set side by side with ordinarily used cathodes of platinum metals and metal sulfides.

Bio-waste-electrode Attains highly catalytic porous carbon stage at 85 oC

This metal free cathode was heated at separate temperatures in presence of inert gases  to bring out better electrical conductivity for effective charge transfer.

It attains highly catalytic porous carbon stage at ideal temperature of 850 oC.

It is highly competent, uncomplicated and economical method  to convert visible sunlight into electricity  and is found to accomplish high open- circuit voltage ,further boosting power conversion efficiencies.
