The Kerala government has approved a new Surrender-cum-Rehabilitation Scheme for Maoists operating in the Kerala state.
The Kerala state cabinet meeting on 10th May 2018 has nodded to the clearance of rehabilitation package of Maoists.
The main aim of implementing rehabilitation package is with an attempt to bring back the left extremists involved in Maoist activities back to the mainstream. To ensure that they don't go back to extremist activities, they will be given employment opportunities. However, those who surrender only for winning the benefits would be kept away.
Under the rehabilitation scheme, the extremists have been categorized into three levels based on their operations and their role in the organisation. Rehabilitation schemes for each category will be different.
The rehabilitation scheme package has also directions to provide housing facilities to the homeless in the three categories.
The Kerala state government has listed Malappuram, Wayanad, Palakkad, Kozhikode and Kannur as having the Maoist presence.
Also, the Kerala state government, in a bid to combat the Maoist menace, was in the process of recruiting 75 tribal young men and women to the civil police through the public service commission.
