On the occasion of 20th-anniversary celebrations of Kargil Vijay Diwas, Indian Army has decided to allow the family members of Martyrs' military personnel to wear their medals on the chest while attending homage ceremonies.
Medals could be worn by Spouses, children and parents of winners of gallantry or service awards can now wear the medals on their chest after the death of the original recipient.
This initiative came after ex-servicemen had expressed a need to honor the services of martyrs soldiers by sporting their medals on specific occasions.
The Indian Army saw this issue and felt that allowing its permission would bring pride to the families of martyrs and ex-servicemen and through this they would be paid tribute to the martyrs as it is allowed in some countries.
Medals are to be worn only by persons on whom these are conferred while serving or by ex-servicemen as laid down in regulations for the Army, 1978 (revised edition).
