Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding, History, Winner List 

The Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding is an International award given by Government of India to commemorate the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Jawaharlal Nehru award was established in 1965. It is administered by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). The award constituent cash Rs. 2.5 Million.

The Jawaharlal Nehru award is given to the people for their outstanding contribution to the promotion of International understanding, imparting friendship and solidarity.

Total 36 awards presented by the Government of India. U Thant was the first winner of Jawaharlal Nehru award.

U Thant in 1965 (Burma), Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1966 (United States), Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan in 1967 (Pakistan), Yehudi Menuhin in 1968 (US), Mother Teresa in 1969 (India).

Kenneth Kaunda in 1970 (zambia), Josip Broz Tito in 1971 (Yugoslavia), Andre Malraux in 1972 (France), Julius Nyerere in 1973 (Tanzania), Raul Prebisch in 1974 (Argentina).

Jonas Salk in 1975 (US), Giuseppe Tucci in 1976 (Italy), Tuksi Meherji Shrestha in 1977 (Nepal), Nichidatsu Fujii in 1978 (Japan), Nelson Mandela 1979 (South Africa).

Barbara Ward in 1980 (UK), Alva Myrdal and Gunnar Myrdal in 1981 (Sweden), Leopold Sedar Senghor in 1982 (Senegal), Bruno Kreisky in 1983 (Austria), Indira Gandhi in 1984 (India).

Olof Palme in 1985 (Sweden), Javier Perez de Cuellar in 1987 (Peru), Yasser Arafat in 1988 (Palestine), Robert Mugabe in 1989 (Zimbabwe), Helmut Kohl in 1990 (Germany).

Aruna Asaf Ali in 1991 (India), Maurice Strong in 1992 (Canada), Aung San Suu Kyi in 1993 (Myanmar), Mahathir Mohamad in 1994 (Malaysia), Hosni Mubarak in 1995 (Egypt).
