The Union Cabinet, governed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on 15 December 2017 in Hyderabad acclaimed the establishment of International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCOocean), as a Category-2 Centre (C2C) of UNESCO.
The establishment of UNESCO Category-2 Centre will provide an opportunity for India to emerge as a leading country in the Indian Ocean.
This C2C is meant to enhance the skill of students and other participants which will increase the employment opportunities within and outside India.
The main aim of this Agreement is to establish a training centre towards the development of capacity for the countries on the Indian Ocean Rim (IOR), African countries which border the Indian and Atlantic Oceans and other Island countries under the frame of UNESCO.
The ITCOocean centre will also provide information services to various sectors like the fisherman, disaster management, shipping, ports, coastal states, navy, coast guard, environment, offshore industries for conducting their day-to-day operations.
