Shillong’s Meghalaya, better called as ‘abode of clouds’ which is also known for its many complex caves hidden under its undulating hills, has now unearthed the longest sandstone cave in the world named as ‘Krem Puri’ as reported on 21st March 2018.
Krem Puri cave was first discovered in 2016, near the village of Laitsohum in Mawsynram area of East Khasi hills district in Meghalaya.
Krem Puri the longest sandstone cave reported to be about 24,583 metres or (24.5 Km) in length, by a troop of adventurers, Meghalaya Adventurers’ Association (MAA), famous for its caving expeditions, measured & mapped the actual length of the Krem Puri cave.
The MAA troop took about 1 month (5th February to 1st March 2018) to explore, measure and map out the entire Krem Puri cave.
Krem Puri cave has also discovered fossils of dinosaurs, especially Mosasaurus, a giant reptile that lived 66-76 million years ago.
Krem Puri cave’s underground cavern is more than 6,000 metres longer than world record-holder ‘Cueva Del Saman’ in Edo Zulia, Venezuela, a quartzite sandstone cave measuring 18,200 metres (18.2km).
Krem Puri sandstone cave is also India’s second longest cave in general category after limestone ‘Krem Liat Prah-Umim-Labit’ system, which measures little over 31 km located in Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya.
