The journey of the Internet begins in India in 1986 with Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) a public-owned company. Initially, the Internet was available for research and educational connectivity among selected establishments in India.
The quantum boom came into the journey of the internet in India with the announcement of the availability of the internet for public use in the country on 15th August 1995.
Since 15th August 1995 launched date Internet in India has completed successful 25 years from government undertakings to private firms Internet Service Providers (ISP) like Satyam, Airtel, Tata Docomo, Aircel, Vodafone and Reliance Jio.
The Internet has seen a quantum change in bandwidth from 9kbps to 1GBps during these 25 years of the journey.
The decision to give Internet distribution to the public to private companies came in 1998 with opening the doors of competition in the field for the benefit of investment in the telecom sector.
Today India has 4G connectivity with a wide coverage of 3G fast internet available in most of the regions of India. around 50% of the population using the Internet for their daily use, shopping, job, or communication.
The Internet has become a big savior in the COVID-19 pandemic providing access window to people to work from home in 2020.
With the launch of 5G or better technology, the Internet of things (IoT) will make the world flat in terms of realtime communication in the coming years.
