The International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is observed on 6th February every year, across the world. It was first introduced in 2003.
The International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM, its main objective is to spread and enhance the awareness about eliminating the practice of female genital mutilation, across the world by the year 2030.
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) comprises procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons. It is recognised internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women.
The FGM practice reflects deep-rooted gender inequality and constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against women and girls.
The FGM practice also violates their rights to health, security and physical integrity, their right to be free from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, and their right to life when the procedure results in death.
At present, UNFPA in collaboration with UNICEF is leading the Zero Tolerance for FGM global programme to accelerate the abandonment of FGM.
