Indian Literary Award Saraswati Samman, History, Winner list

Saraswati Samman award is a literary award which was established in 1991 by the K.K Birla Foundation. The award is given annually for outstanding prose or poetry literary works in any of the 22 Official languages of India.

Saraswati Samman award accompanied with the cash prize of Rs. 15 Lakhs, a citation and a plaque.

Harivansh Rai Bachchan was the first person who awarded with this prestigious SarSaraswati Samman award in 19991 for his four-volume autobiography, and also for “Kya Bhooloon Kya Yaad Karoon”, “Needa Ka Nirman Phir”, “Basere Se Door” and “Dashdwar Se Sopan Tak”.

Other Saraswati Samman awardee:

RamakantRath for his poetry Sri Radha (1992), Vijay Tendulkar for his play Kanyadaan  (1993), Harbhajan Singh for his poetry collection Rukh Te Rishi (1994).

Balamani Amma for her poetry collection Nivedyam (1995), Shamsur Rahman Faruqi for Sher-e Shor-Angez (1996), Manubhai Pancholi Kurukshetra (1997) and Shankha Ghosh for his poetry collection Gandharba Kabita Guccha (1998).

Indira Parthasarthy for her play Ramanujar (1999), Manoj Das for his novel Amruta Phala (2000), Dalip Kaur Tiwana for her novel Katha Kaho Urvashi (2001), Mahesh Elkunchwar for play Yugant (2002), Govind Chandra Pande for his poetry collection Bhagirthi (2003).

Sunil Gangopadhyay for his novel Pratham Alo (2004), K. Ayyappa Panicker his poetry collection Ayyappa Panikarude Kritikal (2005), Jagannath Prasad Das his poetry collection Parikrma (2006) and Naiyer Masud his short stories collection Taoos Chaman Ki Myna (2007).

Lakshmi Nandan Bora his novel Kayakalpa (2008), Surjit Paatar for Lafzan Di Dargah (2009), S. L. Bhyrappa for Mandra (2010), A A Manavalan for Irama Kathaiyum Iramayakalum (2011) and Sugathkumari for her poetry collection Manalezhuthu (2012).

Govind Mishra for his novel Dhool Paudho Par (2013), Veerappa Moily for poetry Ramayana Mahanveshanam (2014).

Padma Sachdev for her autobiography Chitt-Chete (2015), Mahabaleshwar Sail for his novel Hawthan (2016) and Sitanshu Yashaschandra for his poetry collection Vakhar (2017).
