Indigenously developed Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas successfully test-fired an air-to-air Derby Range Beyond Visual Range (BVR) Missile from the Goa coast.
According to the Ministry of Defence officials, Tejas has demonstrated its overall capability as an effective combat jet and inched closer to receive final operational clearance.
The BVR Missile successful test launch from a Tejas jet was carried off the Goa coast and it met all operational requirements.
The successful test launch of BVRMissile will accelerate the issuance of the Final Operational Clearance to the aircraft developed by state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
Earlier, Tejas was given clearance for deployment of armaments and other missiles.
The Indian Air Force had ordered 40 Tejas Mark-1 versions and a request for proposal was issued to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited in December for procurement of another batch of 83 Tejas at a cost of around Rs. 50,000 crores.
Derby is short to medium range BVR Air-to-Air missile. It is a dual-use missile (air-to-air and surface-to-air).It is developed jointly by Israeli armament development agency Rafael and Israel Aircraft Industries MBT. It has the maximum effective range of about 50 km. It weighs around 118 kg light and is 3.8 metres long.
