India Russia signed up an agreement for the development of agro based irradiation centres.
This agreement is signed between Indian Agricultural Association, United Innovation Corporation (UIC), Hindustan Agro co. Ltd and a subsidiary of ROSATOM State Atomic Energy Corporation of Russia.
The motive behind signing this agreement is to establish 25 irradiation centres in the country and in the segment 7 centres will be established in Maharashtra mainly Sindhurg, Satara, Solapur, JNPT, Napur, Jalana and Pune.
Irradiation is the process by which food is protected from the germs by infecting radiation to reduce the loss of food products.
The dosage of this radiation is recommended by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which neither reduces the nutrients from the food nor spoils its taste and appearance.
This measure is taken to do the irradiation treatment because every year about 40% to 50% of the food and food products are spoiled due to incursion of insects, microbiological contamination and poor shelf life.
