The Two unknown & endangered languages have been recently discovered named as Walmiki and Malhar by the University of Hyderabad.
The Walmiki and Malhar endangered languages were discovered by Professor of linguistics, Panchanan Mohanty (University of Hyderabad), as part of activity of Centre for Endangered Languages and Mother Tongue Studies.
The Walmiki and Malhar endangered languages are typically spoken in remote regions of Odisha.
Prof. Mohanty had collected some data and did a prefatory analysis of these two languages and published paper in proceedings of XX Annual Conference of Foundation for Endangered Languages, UK.
Walmiki language is spoken in the district of Koraput of Odisha and on bordering districts of Andhra Pradesh. It is an isolated language and does not belong to a particular family of languages.
Walmiki language’s name has significantly amazing as speaking community claims that it is descent from great Indian saint-poet ‘Valmiki’, who is credited to have written one version of epic Ramayana.
Malhar language is spoken in a remote and isolated hamlet about 165 km away from Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Now it is spoken by the community consisting of about 75 speakers including children.
Malhar language belongs to “North Dravidian subgroup of a Dravidian family of languages. It has close affinities with other North Dravidian languages like Malto and Kurux spoken in Jharkhand, West Bengal and Bihar.
