HD Deve Gowda became part of the Indian National Congress party in 1953. and continued with it until 1962.
HD Deve Gowda was elected as an independent candidate to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from the Holenarasipura constituency in 1962 after this HD Deve Gowda kept on getting elected from the same constituency for 6 consecutive terms- 1962 to 1989.
HD Deve Gowda became the president of Karnataka unit of Janata Dal in In 1994 and he was considered as the main driving force for party’s victory in Assembly polls the same year.
HD Deve Gowda got elected to the Parliament in 1991 from the Hassan constituency of Karnataka.
HD Deve Gowda often raised the problems of his state and especially the farmers to the forefront. HD Deve Gowda possessed a great respect for his honest espousal of the poor condition of farmers, in the Parliament.
