Hajong refugees in India belong to Chittagong Hills in Bangladesh. Chittagong Hills region is the origin place of Hajong people.
Hajong speaks a Tibeto-Berman tongue written in Assamese. Hajong belongs to Hindu religion. Hanjong belongs to Indo-Tibetan group of main mongoloid race. The Hajongs claim that their ancestral home was in Hajo in Assam.
Along with Chakma refugees, Hajong came to take shelter in India after 1960 through Lushai Hills in Mizoram. These refugees got shelter in Tirap, Lohit and SUbansiri districts relief camps in present Arunachal Pradesh.
Along with all Hindu festivals, Hajong celebrates Chorkhila festival with great enthusiasm.
In 2005, Supreme Court of India grants Hajongs voting rights in India.
In September 2017 Ministry of Home Affairs grants limited citizenship to Hajong people to become people of India in their home state Arunachal Pradesh. Under this limited citizenship, Hajong cannot buy land in Arunachal Pradesh following a tough opposition from native Arunachal Pradesh people.
