Grassroots Democracy: Panchayati Raj, Municipal Government and The concept of panchayat raj

Since independence, India has been a welfare state and the main purpose of all government endeavors has been the welfare of its population. The basic principles of the government are ending the poverty, ignorance, diseases, and inequality of opportunities and provide better and higher quality of life. In a simple period, Grassroot democracy is a people/community driven contribution in elections, governance and decision making.

Panchayati Raj:- Panchayat has been a part of the Indian system as an institutional instrument for development. Panchayati Raj Institutions, grass root units of local self-government have been reflected in the form of a means of the social economic change in rural India.

The concept of panchayat raj: The word panchayat is derived from the word Pancha, in which there are references to the existence of Grama Sanghas or rural communities. The institution of Panchayati Raj is as old as Indian civilization itself. It has existed since ancient times, in which the village community had effective control over civil and judicial matters.

Municipal Government: In the Indian territory, municipal governance has been formed since the year 1687, with the creation of Madras Municipal Corporation, and then in Calcutta and Bombay Municipal Corporation in 1726. To illustrate, municipal governments are local authorities created by provinces and territories to offer the most well-managed services under local control.
