North East Railway has adopted Plan Bee last year to prevent elephants to hit by oncoming trains. According to wildlife report from 1987 to 2017 total, 266 elephants were killed in the train collision. In April this year, Four elephants were hit by Howrah-Mumbai Express near Telidihi village of Jharsugida district in Odisha. All four elephants were dead on the spot.
The device works by loudly broadcasting the buzz of swarming honeybees, audible up to 600 meters, a sound that would keep the elephants away. This is because the elephants have a natural fear of the perilous stings of the insects. Cost of this device is 2000.
The system was first tested in the Rangiya division with an electronic buzzer that emits a sound similar to that of bees. The subsequent success led to it being adopted in other regions. It operates using sounds downloaded off the internet. Similar mechanisms to keep elephants of tracks exist across the globe. Apart from this Indian Railway reduced the speed of trains from 109km/hr to 20-25km/hr in different regions.
