Sikkim CM Pawan Chamling Became the Longest-Serving Chief Minister in India

Sikkim Chief Minister, Pawan Chamling has now become the longest-serving CM of any state in India.

CM Pawan Chamling has completed 25 continuous years in CM office. He has surpassed the record of Jyoti Basu, who served as West Bengal CM from 1977 to 2000 (23 years).

CM Pawan Chamling the founding president of the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) Party had become the Chief Minister in December 1994. He founded the SDF party in 1993.

CM Pawan Chamling with the slogan ‘New Sikkim, Happy Sikkim’ had launched several policies and programmes to transform the state.

Pawan Chamling is also the second CM in India after Jyoti Basu, to govern a state 5 terms in a row, with his party ‘SDF party’ winning the 1994, 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014 Sikkim Legislative Assembly elections.

Pawan Chamling was born on 22 September 1950 at Yangang in south Sikkim. He is a matriculate and calls himself a self-educated person.

Pawan Chamling at an age of 22 years entered into politics (in 1973) as negotiations were underway for the merger of the kingdom of Sikkim with India.

In 1975, Pawan Chamling became the block president of the Youth Congress and was elected secretary of the Prajatantra Congress in 1978. In 1983, he was elected as president of the Yangang Gram Panchayat unit unanimously.
