The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched an advanced and updated 'QR code' for offline ‘Aadhaar Verification’ that will have non-sensitive details such as the name, address, photo and date of birth.
The updated ‘QR code’ is developed with an aim at strengthening its privacy measures of Aadhaar usage after UIDAI introduced the concept of virtual identification.
The ‘QR code’ can be used for offline user verification without the 12-digit Aadhaar ID number. The ‘QR code’ would be in the form of a barcode label. It would contain machine-readable information.
The Aadhaar holders would be able to access the QR code by downloading and printing their biometric Aadhaar ID with the code from the website of Unique Identification Authority of India or its mobile app.
The offline QR code will allow everyone to establish their identity through offline verification without revealing their 12-digit Aadhaar number.
The QR code (Quick Response code) is two-dimensional (matrix) machine-readable barcode made up of the black and white squares.
This QR code is readable by the camera of a Smartphone. It is used for storing URLs or other information that link directly to text, emails websites phone numbers. It is capable of 360 degrees (omni-directional), high-speed reading.
The QR Code can store up to 7089 digits as compared to conventional barcodes which can store max 20 digits. It encodes the same amount of data in one-tenth the space of a traditional barcode.
The QR Code contains information both horizontally and vertically. It has an error of correction capability and data stored in it can be restored even if it is partially damaged or dirty.
