The National Safe Motherhood Day (NSMD) is observed every year on April 11 all over India.
The National Safe Motherhood Day (NSMD) is celebrated to create awareness on proper healthcare and maternity facilities to pregnant and lactating women.
The NSMD also aims to create awareness about the institutional delivery, reducing anemia among women and better pre and post natal health care are necessary for mothers.

According to the recent report, approximately every 100,000 live births, in India, up to 407 mothers are dying. Infant mortality rate is 63 deaths for every 1000 births in which 47 % of deaths occur in the first week of life.
The NSMD is an initiative of White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood, India (WRAI) to ensure that every woman has access to during pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal services.
On the recommendation of WRAI and other NGOs of India, the Government of India in 2003 had established this day on the occasion of birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi, wife of MK Gandhi, father of the nation.
India is the first country in the world to celebrate National Safe Motherhood Day. Every year WRAI selects a different theme for marking NSMD.
