Google today celebrated Indian singer, dancer Gauhar Jaan’s 145th Birth anniversary with a Doodle on 26th June 2018.
Gauhar Jaan was titled as the 'first dancing girl' in her records. She was one of the first performers in India to record music on 78 rpm records.
Gauhar Jaan was an Indian singer and dancer from Calcutta. She was one of the first performers to record music on 78 rpm records in India and released by Gramophone Company of India.
Gauhar Jahan had recorded more than 600 records in more than ten languages between 1902 to 1920, She is also known to popularise Hindustani classical music such as Thumri, Dadra, Kajri, Tarana during the period.
Gauhar Jaan was born on 26th June 1873 (as Angelina Yeoward) in Azamgarh, British India and was of Armenian origin. Gauhar Jaan's mother Victoria Hemmings, an Indian by birth, was a trained singer & dancer. Gauhar Jaan died at the age of 56 years on January 17, 1930.
Today Google's Doodle marks Gauhar Jaan's birthday showcasing an animated picture of her singing, holding a white cat and twig of rose flower along with a gramophone behind her image.
