Today, Google’s Doodle celebrates the work achievements of legendary cartographer and geographer Abraham Ortelius on 20th May 2018.
Abraham Ortelius was a Flemish cartographer, who was born on 14th April 1527 in the city of Antwerp in the Habsburg Netherlands (Now Belgium). He died on 28th June 1598.
Abraham Ortelius is popularly recognised as the creator of the first modern atlas. He was also considered one of the founders of the Netherlandish school of cartography.
Abraham Ortelius made a lasting impact by collecting the latest information from scientists, geographers, and cartographers and transforming it into what the world now knows as the modern-day atlas.
Abraham Ortelius was also the first person in the world to demonstrate an awareness of the theory of continental drift.
Abraham Ortelius published its first atlas with the title ‘Theatrum Orbis Terrarum’ (Theatre of the World) in the year 1570.
Abraham Ortelius was also one of the first cartographers to consistently add sources and names to the creators of the original maps, as evidenced by the first map pictured in today’s animated Doodle.
Abraham Ortelius was known for corresponding with prominent scientists and humanists from all over Europe, a practice that yielded much insight into the great thinkers of his time.
Google with its Doodle showed a motion graphic image of an atlas book with turning pages to demonstrate the view of an atlas. Abraham Ortelius cartographic innovation "helped give all a truly global view," says Google.
