According to the Global Hunger Index (GUI), it has been found that India ranked 97 out of 118 developing countries for serious level of poverty in the country.
The basis on which ranking was done is shares of undernourished population, infant mortality rate and wasted and stunned children under age 5.
The countries which are below India are Niger, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Chad and the countries above India are China, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka etc.
This year two measures have been taken to calculate GUI is Stunting and hunger-wasting.
Stunting refers to Deficiency in height according to age and hunger wasting means deficiency in weight in accordance to height and age.
It has been found that 15% of the children are undernourished which means that they lack in food intake both in quantity and quality.
15% of the people are Hunger wasted and 39% of people are stunted and children under 5 years of age mortality rate is 4.8%.
