Gita Gopinath was born on 8th December 1971 in Mysuru, Karnataka. She completed her BA degree in Economics from Lady Shree Ram college of women's, the University of Delhi in 1992. In 1994, she had completed her MA degree in Economics from Delhi School of Economics, University Of Delhi and same from Washington University in 1996. From Princeton University, she completed her PhD in the year 2001.
Gita Gopinath is the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and of Economics at Harvard University. In October 2018, Gita Gopinath was appointed chief economist of the International Monetary Fund. In 2014, she was named one of the top 25 economists under 45 by the IMF and she was chosen as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2011. Economic Adviser to the Chief Minister of Kerala. She also served as a member of the Eminent Persons Advisory Group on G-20 Matters for the Finance ministry.
