Veteran Brigadier Kuldip Singh Chandpuri, the hero of the famous Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 died on 17th November 2018. He was suffering from cancer and died at the Fortis Hospital in Mohali, Punjab. He was 78 years old.
Retired Brigadier Kuldip Singh Chandpuri, with an extraordinary leadership as a Major, secured the Longewala post with only 120 army men and devastated nearly 12 tanks and large troops of Pakistani soldiers without any external help.
Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri's company managed to destroy the Pakistani attempt to advance past the Longewala post for an entire night on 4th & 5th December 1971.
In total, about 34 tanks of Pakistan were devastated with the help of the Indian Air Force and Indian Artilleries later in the morning.
Major Kuldeep Singh Chandpuri's character was enacted by Bollywood actor Sunny Deol in the super hit film "Border' directed by JP Dutta which was released in 1997.
Kuldip Singh Chandpuri born on 22nd November 1940 in Montgomery, Punjab, British India. He served Indian army from 1962 to 1996.
Kuldip Singh Chandpuri bravely fought the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965, Indo-Pakistan War of 1971 and Battle of Longewala. He got retired from the Indian army as a brigadier in 1996.
Kuldip Singh Chandpuri was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, which is India's second-highest gallantry award, for his exceptional leadership during the Battle of Longewala as a Major. Later he was also accorded with Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM).
