The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a nodal agency responsible for protecting and promoting public health in India through regulation and supervision of food safety.
FSSAI was established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and works under the shield of Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
FSSAI is led by a non-executive Chairperson. The executive head of FSSAI is the Chief Executive Officer.
FSSAI envisages science-based standards for articles of food and regulates their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food to 130 crore citizens.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is also responsible for creating an information network across the country so that the public and consumers receive rapid, reliable and accurate information about food safety and hygiene.
