Fields Medals are more properly known by their official name, "International medals for outstanding discoveries in mathematics."

Fields medal is considered as the highest medal the mathematician can receive, known as "Nobel Prize" in mathematics field.

Fields Medal is started by International Congress of International Mathematics Union (IMU) in the year of 1936, in Oslo, Norway. The medal was first awarded to American mathematician Jos Douglas and Finnish mathematician Lars Ahlfors.

From 1950 onwards the award distribution program is done in every 4 years. The motive of this award distribution to motivate and recognize the young mathematician.

The prize money of 15000 Canadian dollars and gold medal were given to the winning mathematician.

Initially, it was given two people from 1966 onwards award will be given to the maximum of four people.  

A candidate's 40th birthday must not occur before January 1st of the year of the Congress at which the Fields Medals are awarded.

The Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani became the first woman Fields Medalist.

Other major awards in mathematics, such as the Abel Prize and the Chern Medal, have larger monetary prizes compared to the Fields Medal.
