Union Ministry of Defence in a bid to provide relief to the families of armed forces missing, disabled or killed in the line of duty, has removed Rs 10,000 cap on educational concession provided to the children of armed forces.

The Ministry of Defence has made this official announcement on 22nd March 2018 in New Delhi.

The Educational concession will include uniform clothes, books and other supplies like the tuition fees, hostel fees among others.

The Educational concession will be implemented only for undertaking studies in Government aided Schools/Educational Institutions, Military/Sainik schools, and other schools and colleges recognised by Central or State Government including the autonomous organisations financed entirely by them.

As per Defence officials, about 250 students were believed to be affected during the current financial year following the government’s decision to cap the assistance.

In 2017-18, out of the total 2,679 students availing concession, 193 students have been reported to be drawing more than the capped amount of tuition/hostel fee and savings due to the capping have been approximately ₹3.20 crore,

The decision to remove cap was proposed by the Defence Ministry to the Finance Ministry in February 2018.

Background

The scheme was initially started in 1972, just after India-Pakistan War (1971) for all the three armed forces.

The scheme includes tuition fee and other fees (Hostel/Books/Uniform) of children of martyrs or those disabled in the line of duty, were completely waived in Government schools, colleges and other professional educational institutions.

On 1st July 2017, the government had issued an order stating that the assistance under the scheme cannot exceed Rs 10,000 per month, as per 7th Pay Commission, which then resulted in huge disappointment to the families of armed forces.
