India Successfully Test Fired ‘BrahMos’ Supersonic Cruise Missile on 22nd March 2018-Details, Features, Specifications

India successfully tests fired its 'BrahMos', a fire & forget medium-range supersonic cruise missile, against a designated target at 8:42 AM on 22nd March 2018 from Pokhran test range in Rajasthan.

The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system is integrated with solely indigenously developed ‘seeker’ which is considered as a big achievement in radar technique to improve missile precision strike capability. This seeker can be developed further and used in other long-range missile systems guiding them honing in on the target precisely.

As per Defence officials, the flight test was conducted by the scientists of DRDO and BrahMos along with the Indian Army.

Union Defence Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman proclaimed that the missile hit the target with "pin-point" accuracy and the success will further strengthen India's national security.

The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile got developed under the joint venture between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India and the NPO Mashinostroyenia of Russia.

The name BrahMos is formed from the names of two rivers: the Brahmaputra of India and the Moskva of Russia.

The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile has a capability to strike enemy targets at a range of up to 400 km. It also has the capability of traveling at speeds of up to Mach 3.0, or three times the speed of sound.

The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile can be launched from submarine, ships, aircraft, or land. It is the fastest supersonic cruise missile in the world.

The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile weights the heaviest in air variant about 2,500 kg with 8.4 metres in length and 0.7 metre in diameter. It can carry about 300 kg of warheads in its air variant.
