Distribution of temperature across the latitudes over the surface of the earth is called its horizontal distribution. The horizontal distribution of temperature is commonly shown by isotherms. Isotherms are line connecting points that have an equal temperature.
Earth intercepts only one in two billion parts of solar radiation. These intercepted radiations are called Insolation.
Insolation means Proportion of Solar energy received by the earth.
Some heat within the core and mantle is transferred to the surface and ocean bottoms through volcanoes, springs, and geysers. But this heat received at the surface form interiors of the earth is negligible compared to that received from the sun.
The average temperature of the earth remains rather constant. It has been possible because of the balance between the amount of incoming solar radiation and the amount of terrestrial radiation returned to space. This balance of incoming and outgoing radiation has been termed as the earth’s Heat budget.
About 35 units are reflected back to space even before reaching the earth’s surface. Of these, 27 units are reflected back from the top of the clouds and 2 units from the snow and ice-covered areas of the earth. The reflected amount of radiation is called the Albedo of Earth.
