Earth Overshoot Day Observed On 1st August 2018: Details, Significance, History, Calculation

Earth Overshoot Day, also known as Ecological Debt Day denotes the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can produce in that year.

Earth Overshoot Day-2018 this year was observed on 1st August 2018. According to the Global Footprint Network (GFN) states that resources what Earth produces in a year we have already utilised in only 7 months.

Earth Overshoot Day concept was first coined by Andrew Simms of the UK think tank New Economics Foundation, which partnered with Global Footprint Network in 2006 to launch the first global Earth Overshoot Day campaign.

Calculation Formula:

Earth Overshoot Day is calculated by dividing the world biocapacity (the amount of natural resources generated by Earth that year), by the world ecological footprint (humanity's consumption of Earth’s natural resources for that year), and multiplying by 365, the number of days in one Gregorian common calendar year.

(World Biocapacity / World Ecological Footprint) * 365 = Earth Overshoot Day
