Dr Homi Jahangir Bhabha, the great nuclear scientist of India, was born on October 30, 1909, in a prosperous Parsi family of Mumbai.
He is said to be the father of India's nuclear energy program.
He laid the foundation of the future nature of the country's nuclear program, which has led India to stand in line with the world's premier nuclear-rich countries.
He founded the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai with the help of JRD Tata and in 1945 it became its director.
After the country's independence, he appealed to Indian scientists living around the world to return to India.
In 1948, Dr Bhabha established the Indian Atomic Energy Commission and represented India on the International Atomic Energy Forums.
Homi Jahangir Bhabha was very supportive of 'the use of nuclear energy for peaceful work'.
Developed nations in the 60s argued that before developing nuclear power, developing countries should focus on other aspects.
Dr Bhabha strongly denied this and advocated the use of nuclear energy in development work.
Nobel laureate Sir CV Raman was called the Leonardo da Vinci of India, versatile multi-talented Doctor Bhabha.
Bhabha was not only a great scientist, but he had a keen interest in classical, music, dance and painting and was also well versed in these arts.
Bhabha was the President of the Atomic Energy Commission from 1950 to 1966 and he used to be the secretary of the Government of India. Says that simplicity Bhabha never let his peon take his briefcase.
Dr Bhabha was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Physics 5 times, but this great scientist could not find the world's greatest honour.
He was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India by the Government of India.
