The utilisation of solar energy has made Indian Union Territory (UT), Diu emerged as the country’s first UT to run 100 % on solar power energy.
The channelization of new solar power plants has resulted in Diu to generate the surplus amount of electricity from the renewable energy source.
The UT, Diu earlier was consuming electricity supplied from the power grid owned by the Gujarat Government but in just 3 years Diu has made rapid progress in solar power generation.
At present, Diu generates a total of 13 megawatts of electricity from solar power generation, out of which 3 MW is generated by rooftop solar plants and 10 MW by its other solar power plants.
The UT, Diu’s apex-time demand for electricity goes up to 7 MW and now it daily generates about 10.5 MW of electricity from solar energy, which has also significantly reduced the power loss in Diu.
The UT, Diu has an area of just 42 square kilometres, despite this scarcity of land, solar power plants have been installed over more than 50 acres.
The UT, Diu has a population of 56,000 residents and now they’re being benefited in electricity bill reduction up to 12% on monthly basis.
