The Odisha Government will integrate with RIMES (Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System) for undertaking & strengthening its early warning services and also for boosting its prepare actions for disaster management in the state.
The Odisha State Disaster Mitigation Authority (OSDMA) and RIMES will create a partnership in the areas of drought monitoring and early warning for different natural disasters.
The OSDMA and RIMES entities will soon sign a Memorandum of understanding (MoU) for collaboration to devise institutional mechanism between them for better coordination.
Under the MoU, OSDMA will get help to enhance its quality, prediction ability and response capacity.
Under the MoU, RIMES will provide technical support to OSDMA regarding the analysis of data to be generated through automatic weather stations being installed in all Gram Panchayats, Validation of Forecast, Early warning and Preparedness for lightening, Heat waves, Floods, Draughts and Tsunami.
The RIMES is an intergovernmental body established & registered under United Nations in 2009.
The RIMES is owned and managed by 45 collaborating countries in the Asia Pacific and Africa Region. India is chairman of the body.
The RIMES operates from its regional early warning centre situated at the campus of Asian Institute of Technology in Pathumthani, Thailand.
The RIMES has been formed from joint efforts of countries in Africa and Asia, after the disaster of Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004.
At present, RIMES is already working with the Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority (TNSDMA).
