ECHS i.e. Ex-servicemen Contributory Health Scheme is a health care plan for ex-servicemen and their families. Ex-servicemen of the Assam Rifles get healthcare under the Central Government Health Scheme so far.
Assam Rifles is the country's oldest Paramilitary Force. It carries on the security of internal security and protection of Indo-Myanmar border in the North-East areas.
Whereas in addition to the Army, Navy, Air Force, the Coast Guard and ex-servicemen of the Special Frontier Forces benefit from the ECHS while the former soldiers of the Assam Rifles are covered under CGHS.
Now the proposal has been passed by the Ministry of Defense to the cabinet and it is expected that soon it will get the approval of the cabinet.
Nearly one lakh ex-servicemen of Assam Rifles are in the army and their dependents are about three and a half lakhs. Those who will get the facility of ECHHAS.
While CGHS facility is available in 37 cities across the country, the ECHS has 427 policlinics nationwide. Which cover 347 districts.
There are 716 districts in the country, according to which the ECCHS covers 49.3% of the polyclinic districts.
