Deepika Kumari (24 years) is an Indian athlete who competes in the event of Archery. Currently, she is ranked world’s 5th archer and former world’s number one in 2012.
Deepika Kumari was born on June 13, 1994, in Ranchi, Jharkhand. Her father Shivnarayan Mahato is an auto-rickshaw driver and mother, Geeta Mahato is a nurse at Ranchi Medical College. As a child, she practised archery using homemade bamboo bows and arrows.
Deepika’s height is 1.61 m (5 ft 3 in) and weight is 56 kg. She joined Tata Archery Academy in 2006 and turned pro.
Deepika won the junior compound competition at the 2006 Archery World Cup in Merida, Mexico.
At the age of fifteen, she won the gold medal in women’s team recurve event and 11th Youth World Archery Championship held in Ogden. In 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, Deepika won two gold medals and honoured with the Outstanding Performance at CWG (Female) Award at the Sahara Sports Awards ceremony.
In 2012 may, Deepika won her first World Cup individual stage recurve gold medal at Antalya, Turkey and became the world’s No. 1 in Women’s Recurve Archery. On July 22, 2013, she won the gold medal in Archery World Cup stage 3 held at Medellin, Colombia.
Till date, Deepika has won 5 gold, 5 silver and one bronze medals and conferred the Arjun Award in 2012. In February 2014, she was honoured with FICCI sportsperson of the year award. The Government of India awarded her the civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 2016.
