The Government of India approves the Major Port Authorities Bill, 2016 to provide flexibility and authority to major ports in the country.
Major Port Authorities Bill, 2016 replacement of Major Port Trusts Act, 1963 which aims to reorienting the governance model in central ports to landlord port model.
The new will will impact faster decision making which will benefit the stakeholders and others.
Under the bill, the composition of the port has been signified and will now consists 10 member including 3-4 independent members in place if 17-18 members.
The bill intends to give more autonomy to the major ports which will translate into real autonomy.
The port authority has given the authority to fix the scale of rates and tariffs for port services and assets including land.
