The National Green Tribunal imposed ban on use of glass-coated ‘manja’ for flying kites as sharp sting process is a danger to humans, animals and birds.
The ban order will be applicable to nylon, Chinese and cotton manja coated with glass.
The matter is listed for next hearing on 1st February, 2017.
The tribunal had earlier issued notices to all the state governments and asks for their response on the matter.
As ‘Manja’ is coated with glass, metals and other sharp material act as a good conductor of electricity and increasing the probability of detached manja strings stuck on power lines.
‘Manja’ also causes serious health problems as minor children were engaged by cottage industry for the manufacture which caused respiratory problems as they inhaled harmful substances which are bad to their health.
