17 May: World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2019 Theme, Details, Aim, Significance, History

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is celebrated every year on 17th May around the world.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is marked to raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day also marks the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention (ITC) and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on 17 May 1865 in Paris.

This year in 2019, it celebrates the 50th anniversary of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day which has been observed annually since 1969.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day-2019 theme is "Bridging The Standardization Gap".

The 2019 theme will allow ITU Membership and other key stakeholders to focus on the opportunities for:

1. Participation of developing countries in ITU's standards-making process;
2. Empowering local experts in the standardization process at the national, regional and international levels; and
3. Promoting the implementation of international standards in developing countries.​
