World Thalassaemia Day (WTD) was declared by the Thalassemia International Federation is a non-profit and nongovernmental organization having 108 member associations all over the world in 55 countries and officially has relation to the WHO and other major health-related agencies since 1996.
Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder in the blood in which the body produces abnormally low Red Blood Cells (RBCs) which are the protein carriers.
Thalassemia disease causes a number of complications such as bone deformities, heart palpitations, jaundice, and delayed puberty, among others. As the disease is inherited, it cannot be cured but can be managed or treated through blood transfusion and bone-marrow cell transplantation if diagnosed at the right time.
It is suggested to couples must get screened for Thalassemia before marriage.
