World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day (WRCRCD) is celebrated every year on 8th May around the world. The day celebrates the principles of “International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement”.
World Red Cross Day is marked to recognize the extraordinary contribution and incredible achievements of the stalwarts and volunteers around the world for helping the people in need anytime, anywhere.
World Red Cross Day also celebrates the birth anniversary Jean Henry Dunant, who was born 8 May 1828. He was the founder of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize.
World Red Cross Day-2019 theme is “#love” or simply "love", which focuses on asking people about what they love about Red Cross and Red Crescent.
World Red Cross movement was started in Europe as Red Crescent Society but in 1876, after Turkey adopted the name, the movement spread to other parts of the world, including the Muslim majority regions. The facility of blood transfusion by Red Cross and Red Crescent agency is the main function in the times of peace and war.
World Red Cross Day is celebrated by organizing a variety of events and programmes at many places to help people free of cost.
