The World Creativity and Innovation Day is celebrated every year on 21st April to encourage people to use creativity in problem-solving for all issues related to achieving the 2015 Sustainable Development Goals.
The World Creativity and Innovation Day was established by the United Nations (UN) on 27th April 2017 and 2019 celebrations mark the second edition year of this day.
The World Creativity and Innovation Day was first commemorated in over 50 countries around the world on 21st April 2012. In 2006, this day became a week starting from 15th April, which is Leonardo Davinci’s birthday; an icon of cross-disciplinary creativity in the arts and sciences.
Marci Segal, a creativity expert, saw a headline in the newspaper “Canada in Creativity Crisis” and after reading that she came up with this idea of creating World Creativity and Innovation Day which was in April 2002.
The UN also take into account the creative economy which includes audiovisual products, design, new media, performing arts, publishing, and visual arts– is a highly transformative sector of the world economy in terms of income generation, job creation, and export earnings.
Culture is an essential component of sustainable development and represents a source of identity, innovation, and creativity for the individual and community. At the same time, creativity and culture have a significant non-monetary value that contributes to inclusive social development, to dialogue and understanding between peoples
