The National Maritime Day is celebrated every year on 5 April to commemorate the maiden voyage of the first Indian owned ship “SS Loyalty” (the first ship of the Scindia Steam Navigation Company Ltd) sailed from Bombay to London 100 years ago on 5th April 1919.
The National Maritime Day was first celebrated on 5 April 1964. It provides an opportunity to spread awareness in supporting safe and environmentally sound commerce between continents across the world.
The sailing of the first ship was an important step for India shipping history when sea routes were controlled by the British. It marked a red-letter day in the maritime history of India, a country known for its seafaring abilities since ancient days.
This year is it is the 56th edition of National Maritime Day-2019 and theme is “Indian Ocean-An Ocean of opportunity”.
The World Maritime Day (WMD) is celebrated on 26th September to highlight the importance of shipping safety, maritime security and the marine environment.
