Peter Tabichi, a member of the Franciscan religious order has been conferred with the prestigious Global Teacher Prize for 2019 at a ceremony in Dubai.
Peter Tabichi is a maths and physics teacher at Keriko secondary school in Pwani Village, in a remote part of Kenya’s Rift Valley.
Peter Tabichi gives away 80% of his income to help the poorest students at the poorly-equipped and overcrowded school who could not afford uniforms and books.
Peter Tabichi started a “talent nurturing club” and expanded the school’s science club, helping pupils design research projects of such quality that many now qualify for national and international competitions.
Peter Tabichi students have taken part in international science competitions and won an award from the Royal Society of Chemistry after harnessing local plant life to generate electricity.
From India, Swaroop Rawal, an Indian teacher at Lavad Primary School, Gujarat and various other schools, was also there in contention for the award.
