The 15th edition of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas begins in Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) from 21st January 2019 to 23rd January 2019. It has been organised by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in association with Uttar Pradesh government.
The 15th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Mauritian counterpart Pravind Jugnauth.
The 15th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas theme is “Role of Indian Diaspora in building a New India”.
The 15th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention is the flagship event of the Government and provides an important platform to engage and connect with the overseas Diaspora.
The 15th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will witness over 300 Indian expats from UAE. The first day of the event is dedicated to the youth.
The valedictory address and Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards will be conferred by the President Ram Nath Kovind on the 23rd January 2019, he added.
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is celebrated every year in India on 9 January. The day also commemorates the return of father of nation Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa in Mumbai (then Bombay) on 9 January 1915. It is celebrated to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community to the development of India.
The day was formally established in 2003. Celebrations of the day are sponsored by Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
