Belgium Prime Minister Charles Michel on 19th December 2018, has resigned heavy pressure on his government because of his support for the UN global pact on migration.
Due to the migration spat, Belgium Prime Minister lost the backing of coalition partner nationalist New Flemish Alliance and opposition parties refused to support his minority government during the debate in the parliament.
Charles Michel lost the backing of the party over his support for the UN migration pact, a cause celebre for European anti-immigration parties.
Charles Michel is a 42 years old Belgian politician and the leader of the francophone liberal party Mouvement Réformateur (MR) since February 2011.
Charles Michel is also the youngest person to become Belgium Prime Minister since 1845. He assumed PM post in October 2014.
Background
Belgium has a history of division between wealthier Dutch-speaking Flanders in the north and the run-down French-speaking former industrial heartland of Wallonia in the south. This has contributed to political instability and Belgium holds the modern European record for going the longest time without a government, a whopping 541 days in 2010-2011
