Pakistan late human rights activist, Asma Jahangir was posthumously awarded the 2018 UN Human Rights Prize on 18th December 2018
Asma Jahangir daughter Munizae Jahangir ( journalist & human rights activist) received the award on her behalf at the award ceremony that took place at the UN Headquarters in New York, as part of activities to celebrate Human Rights Day.
Asma Jahangir was an outspoken critic of Pakistan’s powerful military establishment and she fought against religious extremism and for the rights of oppressed minorities in Pakistan. She died due to cardiac arrest on 11 February 2018.
With this win, Asma Jahangir became the fourth Pakistani woman to be awarded the UN Human Rights Prize. Earlier winners were Begum Rana Liaquat Ali Khan (1978), Benazir Bhutto (2008) and Malala Yousufzai (2013).
The three others who received the awards were: Ms. Rebeca Gyumi (Tanzania), Ms. Joenia Wapichana (Brazil) and Front Line Defenders (Irish organization).
The UN Human Rights Prize was given at the event organized to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is marked annually on 10th December.
It was first conferred in December 1968, marking the twentieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
