The Union Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) on 5th November 2018, approved the operationalisation strategy for Operation Greens.
The Operation Greens aimed at ensuring availability of Tomatoes, Onions, and Potatoes across the country throughout the year without price volatility.
The Operation Greens was announced by Finance Minister, Arun Jaitely in the budget speech of 2018-19 with an allocation of Rs 500 crores to stabilise the supply of Tomato, Onion, and Potato (TOP) crops.
Food Processing Industries Minister Harsimrat Kaur informed that the government had taken special measures and grants-in-aid under the scheme to ensure enhanced production of these 'TOP' crops.
The Operation Greens launched with an allocation of Rs 500 crore on the lines of Operation Flood. It aims to promote farmer producers organisations, processing facilities, agri-logistics, and professional management.
The Operation Greens also aims to aid farmers and help control and limit erratic fluctuations in the prices of tomatoes, onions, and potatoes (TOP). It is majorly a price fixation scheme that aims to ensure farmers are given the right price for their produce. The idea behind it is to double the income of farmers by the end of 2022.
