The Union Government on 23rd October 2018, removed CBI Director Alok Verma from his post.
Alok Verma was appointed as CBI Director in 2016 for two years and his tenure ends in December 2018.
The decision was taken by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) in the past midnight.
The ACC also appointed M Nageshwar Rao, presently working as Joint Director at the CBI, as new Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The ACC decision initiated after prolong war between CBI Chief Alok Verma and Special Director Rakesh Asthana escalated over bribery allegations, hurled at each other.
CBI chief Alok Verma alleged corruption charges on Rakesh Asthana with regard to the Sterling Biotech case.
Rakesh Asthana in turn hit back by writing to the Cabinet Secretary saying that Alok Verma was interfering in his probes and had tried to stop a raid on Lalu Prasad in the IRCTC case, alleging corruption on Verma’s part.
Earlier, the CBI divested Asthana of all the supervisory charges. The bureau also added five new sections into the existing bribery FIR lodged against Asthana.
Alok Verma is a 1979 batch IPS officer of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre.
Alok Verma led position as the Commissioner of Delhi Police in February 2016, he was the Director General of Tihar jail.
Alok Verma has served in the Delhi Police in a number of positions, including DCP (south district), JC of Crime Branch, JCP (New Delhi Range), Special CP (Intelligence) and Special CP (Vigilance).
Alok Verma has also served as the Inspector General (IG) of Police in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Puducherry.
