Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has appointed Dr. Shekhar Mande as the Director General of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Research (DSIR).
Dr. Shekhar Mande will succeed Girish Sahni who had superannuated in August 2018.
Dr. Shekhar Mande is a structural biologist is Director of National Centre for Cell Sciences, Pune.
Dr. Shekhar Mande has worked at Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics, Hyderabad.
Dr. Shekhar Mande is also a top functionary of Vijnana Bharati, a swadeshi science movement affiliated with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
Dr. Shekhar Mande is fellow of all three major science academies and recipient of coveted SS Bhatnagar Prize (2005), most prestigious science honor in the country.
CSIR is an autonomous body and India’s premier research and development (R&D) organisation. It operates as an autonomous body registered under the Registration of Societies Act of 1860.
CSIR was established in 1942. It is mainly funded by the Union Ministry of Science and Technology. Prime Minister is the chairman of CSIR.
CSIR is headquartered in New Delhi.
CSIR has been ranked 9th in the world amongst 1207 government institutions, with an overall global ranking of 75 in the world, covering 5250 institutions. It runs a chain of 38 national research labs.
