NASA successfully launches National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) the first series of highly advanced geostationary weather satellites from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.
GOES-R was successfully launched at 6:42 p.m. EST which aims to boost nation’s weather observation capabilities, leading to more accurate and timely forecasts, watches and warnings.
GOES-R would strengthen NOAA’s ability to issue life-saving forecasts and warnings and make United Nations States an even stronger, more resilient weather-ready nation.
This satellite would be renamed as GOES-16 after it reaches its final designated orbit and is expected to be operational within a year.
GOES-R to result in 34 new or improved meteorological, solar and space weather products.
GOES-R would be a part of Search and Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking (SARSAT) system and GOES-R is carrying a special transporter that can detect distress signals from emergency beacons.
